Snow Advisory

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

See Severe weather terminology for a comprehensive article on this term and related weather terms.

A Snow Advisory is issued by the National Weather Service of the United States when a low pressure system produces snow that may cause a significant pain in the ass, but does not meet warning criteria. The advisory criteria varies from area to area. Snow advisories are typically issued only when a storm system is expected to only produce snow in the advised area. Depending on the amount of snow that is expected, a Heavy Snow Warning can be issued for similar times, but when larger amounts of snow are expected. The exact border between a snow advisory and heavy snow warning varies throughout the country. If other forms of wintry precipitation are expected, then a Winter Weather Advisory or winter storm warning can be issued, also depending on the amount of precipitation that is expected.

Low-rolling resistance tires

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Low-rolling resistance tires are tires which are designed to improve fuel efficiency of a car by minimizing the energy wasted as heat as the tire rolls down the road. Frictional losses can account for over 80% of the fuel energy consumed by a typical car. Of that, approximately 5–15% is lost to rolling resistance.Low Rolling Resistance Tires (Website). Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, U.S. Department of Energy. Retrieved on 2007-08-11. A 2003 California Energy Commission (CEC) preliminary study estimated that adoption of low-rolling resistance tires could save 1.5–4.5% of all gasoline consumption, but that current data were also insufficient to compare safety and other characteristics.California State Fuel-Efficient Tire Report: Volume I California Energy Commission, July 2003. Retrieved on 2007-08-11. A database of much more complete data will be released by the CEC pending completion of an ongoing study.Tire and Fuel Effiency California Energy Commission, June 2006. Retrieved on 2007-08-11. A separate study by the Transportation Research Board also found it unclear whether economic and environmental savings would be offset by shorter tire life.”Tires and Passenger Vehicle Fuel Economy: Informing Consumers, Improving Performance — Special Report 286.”, National Academy of Sciences, Transportation Research Board, 2006. Retrieved on 2007-08-11..

Fuel economy effects are greater for vehicles with hybrid drivetrains and technologies such as cylinder cutout.
Most hybrid vehicles are equipped with low-rolling resistance tires.

Auto manufacturers in the United States typically equip new vehicles with tires that have lower rolling resistance than their average after-market replacements, in order to meet Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards.

Snow Miser

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Snow Miser is a fictional character from the Rankin/Bass-produced 1974 stop-motion animated Christmas special The Year Without a Santa Claus. Snow Miser was voiced by actor/comedian Dick Shawn.

In the special, Snow Miser controlled cold weather all over Earth; his archnemesis is his half-brother, Heat Miser. Mother Nature was Snow Miser’s (and Heat Miser’s) mother.

Snow Miser was a giant humanoid creature, with the supernatural power to freeze objects at will. Snow Miser lived in a large ice castle, and was attended to by a host of miniature versions of himself. He defended his domain fiercely, yet unlike Heat Miser, was a gregarious, friendly, jocular sort, given to gales of laughter and bad puns about snow and cold weather.

Both Snow and Heat Miser sing a memorable ragtime style song introducing themselves.

In the 2006 NBC live-action remake, he is played by actor Michael McKean.

Collectibles

Action figures based on The Year Without a Santa Claus were produced by Palisades Toys in 2002 and included the Snow Miser, the Heat Miser and their tiny clone-like assistants. The figures are scheduled to be re-released by NECA in late 2006.

Trivia

In the movie Batman and Robin, Mr. Freeze (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) tries to get his henchmen to learn the Snow Miser’s song. A clip from The Year Without a Santa Claus is shown.

Therefore the interest in the product shortly decreased and the company went bankrupt in 1924.
